general synoptic situation:

A low 996 over Ukraine moves northwards to western Russia 

and deepens. The ridge of a high 1030 over the Barents Sea 

extends to northern Scandinavia. An extensive high 1030 

west of Ireland weakens somewhat. A ridge over the North 

Sea swings rapidly towards the Alps. Friday evening, a 

ridge reaches the Norwegian Sea. A low 1003 north of the 

Faroe Islands moves into the greater Hamburg area by 

Friday evening, temporarily deepening.
