general synoptic situation:

A ridge of high pressure running between a high 1024 over 

southern Russia and a high 1013 northwest of the Lofoten 

Islands is shifting slightly eastward while weakening. An 

extensive low 984 just west of the Hebrides is moving 

towards Scotland and losing its function as a steering 

low. It will be replaced by a low approaching from the 

central North Atlantic on Saturday. Fronts and secondary 

lows affecting the North Sea and Baltic Sea.
