general synoptic situation:

A high 1027 extending from Lapland to Estonia intensifies, as is 

an associated ridge extending to southern Norway. Another ridge 

expands towards Bulgaria. A deep low 972 west of Ireland weakens.

A secondary low 977 west of Brittany is moving towards the Irish 

Sea while weakening. An associated trough extends to the western 

Mediterranean, where it forms an independent deep low.
