general synoptic situation:

A low 999 over Karelia moves south-eastwards while weakening. A 

trough extending to southern Sweden moves south-eastwards and 

deepens into a secondary low 996 over western Russia. An 

extensive high 1033 over the British Isles weakens only slightly.

A broad ridge towards the Balkans remains in place. Another ridge

over the Norwegian Sea moves southeastwards to Sweden.
